Storing Baby Things for the Future

Storing Baby Things for the Future

Are your little ones growing up and heading off to school? Has your baby grown out of their first baby clothes and early toys, but you don’t want to get rid of them in case of a future baby arriving? Here’s where self-storage can help you to tackle a lack of storage space or meet your desire to keep things safe and secure.

Below are some tips to help you out.

Storing Clothes

The first thing to do when deciding how to store baby clothes is to assess which ones you actually want to keep. While it is tempting to keep every little sock, it’s much better to select the best clothes to keep and store them so you don’t have to sort them all out when you get them out of storage in the future.

Make sure that clothes aren’t stained or worn, and that they still have all their buttons and attachments. Make sure any clothing you do decide to keep is well laundered and dry before attempting to store it.

For short-term solutions, if you’re only storing the clothing for a few months because a family member or friend is expecting a baby, packing the clothes in cardboard boxes is absolutely fine. However, if the clothing is going to be stored for a longer period of time, it would be a good idea to invest in some vacuum storage bags to keep the clothes fresh and clean from dust.

If you have a large number of clothing items, sort the items into different boxes and categorise by sizes, e.g. 00000, 0000, 000 and so on. You can also use a separate box for any miscellaneous objects such as bibs, blankets, clothes and muslins.

At Shuttle Box Mobile Self-storage, we offer a large range of packing supplies, like cardboard boxes, to help with your storage process so your process can be simplified if storing with us. Check our Packing Supplies to find out what materials we stock.

Storing toys and books

When storing toys, you need to go through a very similar process to store clothes. First, assess which toys are worth keeping, which toys have minimal discolouration, no pieces missing, no broken parts, and are classic enough to be appreciated by any era of child. Inexpensive toys that are likely to be updated in future years and are inexpensive to purchase are probably not worth storing.

After that, the next step is to clean and disinfect all items, since you don’t want anything nasty growing on them while they are in storage. For more fragile items, an extra step to consider is wrapping them in either butchers paper or bubble wrap to avoid possible breakages during moving and transportation. Remember to also remove any batteries to avoid corrosion.

Collect all parts for the same toy in small zip lock bags and attach to the main body of the toy with some tape to make sure nothing is lost.

Plastic storage boxes are again a good solution for storage since they are much less likely to encourage mould or mildew. Label all boxes to identify what is being stored inside. With Shuttle Box Mobile Self-storage units, there is little chance of any environmental damage to property since they are stored in a safe, clean and dry warehouse which is monitored 24/7.
